Real Estate Planning for Life After 55

Does where you live support the life you want now — and the life you may need later?

More than 10 years in real estate, combined with personal caregiving experience, helped Jason see how closely a home connects with independence, family and future planning.

Meet Jason

For Jason Hindle, helping someone with real estate after 55 means looking beyond the property itself.

Jason has been a REALTOR® for more than 10 years, but his approach has also been shaped by personal experience.

He spent years helping care for his grandmother while she lived with vascular dementia and later spent more than four years as the primary caregiver for his mother while she experienced advanced Alzheimer's. His broader background includes Level 2 industrial first-aid training, emergency preparedness and continuity planning, entrepreneurial experience, practical problem solving and voluntary assistance involving people with disabilities.

Those experiences helped Jason recognize how closely a home can become connected with health, mobility, independence, family and security.

That's why his 50-FIVE+ approach begins with one question:

Does where you live support the life you want now — and the life you may need later?

The answer isn't automatically to sell or downsize.

For some people, a smaller home makes sense. Others may benefit from rightsizing, relocating closer to family or services, or choosing a property with fewer physical barriers. Sometimes the best decision is to remain exactly where you are.

Jason's 50-FIVE+ approach considers Real Estate, Health, Mobility, Security, Relocation, Amenities, Rules, Decluttering and Inheritance — subjects that may appear separate but can become interconnected when someone is making a major housing decision.

Jason also understands where his professional role ends. Medical, legal, tax, financial, insurance and estate matters may require other qualified professionals.

His objective is straightforward:

Help clients understand their real-estate choices while they still have time to choose.

A Different Question About Real Estate

There comes a point when a real-estate decision may become about much more than the property.

Does where I live support the life I want now — and the life I may need later?

That question sits at the centre of Jason Hindle's approach to 55+ real estate.

After more than 10 years as a REALTOR®, Jason understands the traditional side of buying and selling property. But some of the experience that shaped his approach to older adults and changing housing needs didn't come from real estate.

It came from life.

Experience That Became Personal

Jason spent years helping care for his grandmother while she lived with vascular dementia. He later spent more than four years as the primary caregiver for his mother while she experienced advanced Alzheimer's.

His broader background has included Level 2 industrial first-aid training, emergency preparedness and continuity planning, entrepreneurial experience, practical problem solving and voluntary assistance involving people with disabilities.

Those experiences exposed Jason to a simple reality:

People's lives can change faster than their homes do.

Stairs, maintenance, transportation, accessibility and proximity to family or healthcare may barely be considered when everything is going well. If circumstances change, those same details can suddenly become extremely important.

More Than Downsizing

Jason doesn't believe turning 55 automatically means it's time to sell a longtime home and buy something smaller.

Sometimes downsizing makes sense.

Sometimes rightsizing is more appropriate — choosing a property's size, layout, location and responsibilities around the life someone actually wants.

A larger or differently configured property may even make sense for family, hobbies, a caregiver or multigenerational living.

And sometimes the answer is:

Stay exactly where you are.

Jason's objective isn't to manufacture a transaction. It's to help a client understand the options.

The 50-FIVE+ Approach

Jason's 50-FIVE+ approach considers interconnected areas including:

REAL ESTATE • HEALTH • MOBILITY • SECURITY • RELOCATION • AMENITIES • RULES • DECLUTTERING • INHERITANCE

Someone may begin by thinking about downsizing but discover the real issue is mobility.

That can lead to questions about stairs and accessibility.

Then location becomes important because family or healthcare is too far away.

A strata property may introduce questions about security, amenities and rules.

Decades of possessions bring decluttering into the conversation.

And eventually the family home itself can become part of an inheritance discussion.

These aren't reasons to sell. They're reasons to plan.

Protecting Independence

Health and mobility planning isn't about predicting disability.

It's about asking whether a property can continue supporting someone's independence if circumstances change.

Jason encourages clients to notice details such as entrances, stairs, elevators, bathrooms, parking, main-floor living, walking distances and nearby services.

The question becomes:

If my health or mobility changed, would this home still work for me?

The Community Matters Too

A suitable home in the wrong location may still be the wrong choice.

Communities throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley can provide very different combinations of healthcare access, transportation, walkability, recreation, amenities, accessibility and proximity to family.

Jason therefore encourages clients to consider not simply what a property costs, but what living there will actually be like.

Knowing Where Real Estate Ends

A 55+ housing decision can intersect with healthcare, taxation, insurance, finances, estates and legal matters.

Jason doesn't pretend one REALTOR® should provide all those services.

When specialized advice is required, an appropriate lawyer, accountant, financial professional, healthcare provider, insurance professional, estate professional or other qualified specialist may need to become involved.

Jason's responsibility is real estate — while understanding how the real-estate decision connects with the larger picture.

Start Before You Need to Move

Jason believes the best time to begin planning may be before someone needs to move at all.

When everything is going well, there is time to research, talk with family, compare communities, understand the current property and consider alternatives.

An unexpected health event, financial change or family emergency can turn a decision that might have taken a year into one that needs to be made in weeks.

Having a Plan B isn't expecting something to go wrong.

It's protecting another choice.

Jason's philosophy ultimately comes back to one question:

Does where you live support the life you want now — and the life you may need later?

Plan ahead. Protect your choices. Enjoy your next chapter.

Jason’s caregiving experience helped shape his belief that planning should begin while there is still time to consider choices. Housing, family support and the community around a home can become closely connected when circumstances change.

A professional team

Jason’s role is real estate. Medical, legal, tax, financial, insurance and estate questions may need other qualified professionals. A housing decision can benefit from considering those perspectives together.

Have a Plan B

A backup plan can help preserve choices if health, family or financial circumstances change. Begin by discussing what matters, who could help and whether the current home would still work.
